Poland v England World Cup qualifier – England player ratings
James Milner tops the marks for England, but the competition in Warsaw wasn't exactly fierce

Joe Hart 5

The goalkeeper was faultless and, in truth, largely untroubled for 70 minutes but his disastrous flap at Ludovic Obraniak's corner handed Poland an equaliser. Admitted the mistake cost his side two points

Glen Johnson 6

Made two potentially goal-saving challenges either side of half-time to rescue first Joleon Lescott then Phil Jagielka after mistakes by the central defenders but will have been frustrated with his lack of effectiveness when going forward

Phil Jagielka 6

Largely stood firm alongside his former Everton team-mate in the centre of the England defence but had his hands full with the dangerous Robert Lewandowski. Hideous air-kick early in the second half, though, could well have led to a goal

Joleon Lescott 6

On a par with his central defensive partner, though his error was nothing like Jagielka's clanger. Made a couple of thumping headed clearances from set-pieces but, like most of the backline, was left exposed by England's absent midfield

Ashley Cole 5

Bedevilled by the raiding Lukasz Piszczek and was often left trailing in the wake of the Poland full-back. In his defence, neither Tom Cleverley, Wayne Rooney nor Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain provided sufficient support from left of midfield

Steven Gerrard 6

Guilty, like every England player, of ceding possession far too easily, but at least made some impact on the game. His whipped set-pieces were arguably England's best hope of finding the net and it was from his corner that Rooney scored

Michael Carrick 5

Temporarily retired from international football earlier this year and at times it seemed that was still the case. Anonymous for long periods and hugely disappointing on the ball. Gave no suggestion he is set for a more substantial role in the squad

James Milner 7

Arguably England's best player, which tells its own story as the Manchester City man was solid but in no way spectacular. Protected Johnson well, sent in several useful crosses and retained the ball better than England's other midfielders

Wayne Rooney 5

Scored with his shoulder, but this was another worryingly ineffective international performance from the No10. Lacklustre both behind Jermain Defoe in an attacking central role and when on the left. Missed a great chance to double England's lead

Tom Cleverley 5

Utilised in an unfamiliar left-midfield role and struggled to make an impact. Faded badly after a couple of early bursts and made no great difference to the flow of the game when moved inside. The comfort is that he will surely have better days at this level

Jermain Defoe 5

Like Rooney, he missed a fine chance to make it 2-0 just before Poland's equaliser. It was noticeable that England improved as an attacking force once Welbeck and Oxlade-Chamberlain were introduced in place of England's more experienced starters

Substitutes

Danny Welbeck (for Defoe, 67) A couple of sniffs at goal, and generally looked livelier than the player he replaced. 6

Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Rooney, 73) Brought a spark that England had been badly lacking. 7
