Restiadargent can plough through Ascot mud to cause 12-1 Sprint shock
French filly put up a great effort at Royal Ascot and is an attractive alternative to the more fancied runners

It is not quite the galaxy of stars for which the organisers might have wished but Ascot's second British Champions Day card offers more than just Frankel, for those interested in having a bet. The prospect of further rain and genuinely attritional conditions may deter punters from putting their hands in their pockets until the picture has become clearer, but there are some eye-catching prices available about some of the outsiders who relish truly soft going.

The six-furlong Sprint has an interesting make-up to it, with Society Rock and Wizz Kid both coming into the contest on the back of excellent recent efforts and both have shown excellent form at this track and in soft ground before, making them of obvious appeal here.

But neither have an exceptional wins-to-runs strike-rate, both being prone to the occasional inexplicably below-par performance. Society Rock has had his problems at the stalls and Wizz Kid may be marginally more effective over the minimum trip.

It is therefore unlikely that either will prove terribly popular in the betting and those looking for early value may be better advised to look at the French raider Restiadargent (2.20), available at 12-1 with Stan James, Coral and the Tote.

She came within half a length of causing one of the upsets of the season when third to Black Caviar in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting and, although twice beaten since at Deauville, she now returns to a track and trip at which we know she is fully effective.

Soft ground is a definite plus for Restiadargent. Although the going for the Golden Jubilee was officially recorded as "good", there was plenty of cut in the ground by the time that race was run.

At a really big price, I can't resist a mention of Royal Rock, a ridiculous 79-1 on Betfair, in the same race. Fourth here 12 months ago, he needs an end-to-end gallop, six furlongs and soft ground, and will get his conditions for the first time this season.
